September 8, 2026

Gruenstein Law PLLC today announced that Thomas H. Lee, one of the country's leading constitutional, national security and international law scholars and litigators, has joined the firm as a Partner.

“Twenty-five years ago, Tom and I were co-clerks to Justice Souter at the Supreme Court,” said Benjamin Gruenstein, founder of Gruenstein Law. “I'm thrilled that my old friend has become my new partner. He brings to the firm over two decades of experience in the areas of constitutional, national security and international law, and his ability to develop bold, creative legal strategies on behalf of clients will be an extraordinary asset.”

“When Ben launched Gruenstein Law, I saw an extraordinary opportunity to build something special together. I knew I wanted to be part of it,” said Lee. “I share his commitment to building a firm around small, focused teams, exceptional client service and the thoughtful use of AI to deliver the highest-caliber representation.”

Lee is the Leitner Family Professor of International Law at the Fordham University School of Law, where he has taught constitutional law, federal jurisdiction and litigation, international arbitration, national security law and telecommunications law. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Columbia, Harvard and the University of Virginia law schools.

In 2024, Lee was lead counsel in the first lawsuit to secure a federal court ruling that the Corporate Transparency Act, a federal law requiring millions of businesses to disclose their beneficial owners to the government, was unconstitutional. From 2019 to 2020, Lee served as Special Counsel to the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense, where he advised on a wide variety of national security law matters.

Lee graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College and with honors from Harvard Law School, where he was Articles Chair of the Harvard Law Review. After law school, he clerked for Judge Michael Boudin on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and for Justice David H. Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Gruenstein Law also announced that Jonathon R. La Chapelle has joined the firm as Counsel. La Chapelle brings extensive experience litigating corporate, securities, commercial and privacy disputes in state and federal court and before domestic and international arbitral tribunals. He began his career as a litigation associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and received his J.D., with High Honors, from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served on The University of Chicago Law Review, and his B.A. in Economics, with Highest Distinction, from the University of Michigan.
